Hey Tobi,

thanks a lot for this two articles. It is great to see that someone thinks about the whole process and the big picture.
I'm a student and thinks about it to participate GSoC for TYPO3 this year (2011), but it failed because of a lack of time. But during the summe i asked me often what is going on in the running GSoc_Porjects of TYPO3. Are they active? Or are they all failed?
I don't know about the internal structures of TYPO3 during the GSoC, but it would be great if there are public protocolls after this meeting like http://forge.typo3.org/projects/typo3v46-projects/wiki/2011-03-14_-_Minutes_from_the_1st_meeting

I like your thinking about it and your ideas you mentioned to raise the inner / outer communications. Now we have a (public) big blue button server, I think this could be used for this?

In my point of view it is very important to write down the tasks of a mentor and of a student. As you said, you were paid by Google and have to do a (great) job. See Google as a normal "customer".
Another point you mentioned is to chose the right student. This could be very difficult. As you know TYPO3 has a big barrier to get into it. The way to let the student contribute some no brainers is a good way. This must be written down in the papers as well (like perl).

For me i will think about it to participate as a student for TYPO3 next year. I will have a look at the timeframe and the rules. But anyway. Great articles. I wish there are more like this in the (TYPO3) world.

Excellent article, Tobi! A lot of food for thought.

In general I think we should not underestimate the amount of work that goes into 1) defining a good project and 2) mentoring it afterwards. This is definitely what has kept me from applying so far.

Hi,

thanks for sharing this nice script. It is really usefull.
There is a typo in the line "substr($constrainString, 1);" at the bottom. A "t" is missing. Without that regular queries (without AND/OR) won't work.

Schönen Abend
Andreas
